Hi Dave Yes I'll be at Tanner's Hatch tomorrow night. I hope you realise
the near legendary status this hostel has in my family mythology! I've
ever actually been there, but my sister spent an awful lot of time
staying there when a teenager....
I'm also booked in for the Friday cause there's a folk session on and
I fancy just taking an easy day on Sat and getting some riding in.

In case it's of relevance to anyone (you might want to choose to avoid
it,
now you know I'm staying there!), I've booked into the youth hostel at

Tanners Hatch for the Thursday night. It's only 10.95 for the night
(much
cheaper than anything you can find in Guildford). But you'll need a
bike to
get there. I reckon it's about 8 miles along the lanes from CTC's
offices.
I'd be glad of fellow wobblers to help guide me from the pub .....

Dave

Subject: Announcement: Programme & Registration details for 4th Cycling
&
Society symposium, 7th September 2007

Dear All,

I'm pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 4th
Cycling
and Society Symposium, to be held at the CTC offices in
Guildford, 7th September 2007. Details below.

Please note that The Cycling and Society Research Group (i.e. all
members of
this list who wish to be counted as part of the group) will be meeting
from
lunchtime on Thursday 6th September,
first to talk among ourselves about current and future plans, and then
to
meet with people from CTC to discuss potential future research
projects.
Hopefully many of us will go for
dinner together in the evening. Please could you let me know if you'd
like
to join us for these meetings.

The precise programme for the symposium is currently being finalised,
but will include the following papers:

* Ian Walker, 'Formal and informal communication between cyclists and
drivers'
* Jutta Deffner, 'What Moves Us? How Individual Attitudes and Urban
Surroundings Influence Cycling'
* John Parkin & Jane Hunter, 'On the need to include effort in mode
and
route choice modelling for cycling'
* John Parkin, 'Policy implications of results from an aggregate model
of cycle use in the UK'
* David Patton, 'The Ministry of Transport responds to cycling road
accidents in interwar Britain'
* Jake Voelcker, 'A Critical Review of the Legal Penalties for Drivers
Who Kill Cyclists or Pedestrians'
* Peter Cox, 'Activism and Market Innovation: changing patterns in the
cycle trade'
* Adam Thorpe & Lorraine Gamman, 'Bike bombs revisited'
* Katrina Brown, Vicki White, Claudia Cartner & Alister Scott,
'Disturbing the geographies of recreation: Employing the
‘ride-along’ to investigate how mountain bikers perform and
re-work
rural space'

In addition, there will be a panel discussion on 'Cycling research and
cycling futures', exploring the scope for bringing together research,
policy and campaigning objectives and priorities.

Finally, the symposium will include the launch of the new 'Cycling and
Society' collection edited by Dave Horton, Paul Rosen & Peter Cox, and
published by Ashgate. Copies of the book will be available at the
symposium, fresh off the presses.

Exact timings for the event will be provided closer to the date, but
the
start time will be 9.45 for the conference opening (9.15 for coffee
and
registration), and then a 5.30 finish. Guildford is easily accessible
by
rail and road from London and many others parts of the UK. The CTC HQ
is
a 10-15 minute cycle ride or 40-50 minute walk from Guildford Station.

Please note that space is limited, so it is recommended that you
register early, by initially sending an email to [log in to unmask]
Whilst
the symposium is being generously supported by the CTC, unfortunately
it
is necessary to include a very small registration fee. This is £15 for
professional researchers, policymakers and campaigners, and £5 for
volunteers, students or others on a low income. Therefore, at the same
time as emailing, please send a cheque for the relevant amount, made
payable to 'CTC', to Paul Rosen, Stockholm Environment Institute,
University of York, Heslington, York, YO10 5DD. The final programme,
directions to the CTC and accommodation information will be sent out
on
receipt of your cheque. In the event that we run out of space, your
cheque will be returned. Please don't worry if you don't hear
immediately, as the holiday period may delay things by up to a week
during August.

Best wishes,

Paul
