At least with the 0.3.3 release, not mentioning it also tries to use
python (I'll try with svn; haven't been keeping up w\ that due to autoconf
issues on my end). I only noticed that not mentioning it causes
compilation errors when the default python is 2.5 (2.4 seems to compile
ok).
Just out of curiosity, what type of system are your writing on?
