Forget I asked this one. I am quite happy that people just have to be
careful in multiuser situations if it is going to be complicated.

I think someone doing an update has got far enough along to know what to
do (probably..) and can cope with pressing one cancel button. (But also
a "do not ask me again" button would be OK if user profiles do ever exist).
If you are opening up analysis just to open spectra (which I agree is a
very important task to make easy) then typing in a bogus project name is
a very minor chore (or just pressing a cancel button).
I had not spotted the "Open Spectra" thing, but it still asks you if you
want to save the project at the end of the session so I think that is a
bit mysterious given you never asked to start a new project in the first
place (and all your menu options presumably unfreeze themselves after
the first "open spectra".).
I am trying to think of things that make the brand new user feel at
home. Millions of greyed out options in a piece of software immediately
makes me feel intimidated that I have got to learn a lot to get started
in a program.
