Like Sean, I think September is a problem month for people. I wanted to attend the Conference (and to possibly give a presentation about the work of the Bristol Black Archives Partnership) but I'm busy with work especially as Black History Month is drawing near. Perhaps a change of date might help. The conferences in April/May time have been well attended.

This is a blow. I was one who could not attend because of a work related
event on the same day. However, that has had to be re-scheduled s- but I
have not yet notified Caz that I will now be coming.
Lack of attendance and speakers does not mean there is a BASA crisis.
One of the problems is that the end of September is very busy with Black
History Month events starting. A lot of BASA members are very busy in their
wide ranging capacities in such work as well as in Slavery and Abolition
work. Many of us are also members of other organisations many of which also
hold their Conferences and AGMs between the end of September and end of
November. There is a limit to the number of weekend days people can devote
to attending events.
If as a result of Caz's email there is a rush of people saying they will be
coming perhaps they could indicate whether they could give a talk abut work
they have been doing or what has been going on in their area.
Perhaps instead of a debate about the future of BASA (which suggests
negativity and crisis) there should be a discussion about (a) what has been
learnt from Slavery and Abolition 2007, (b) what more needs to be done (c)
picking up on Marik'a continual point about post 1838s, and (d) and about a
positive plan on what priorities should be for the next two years e.g. by
using commemorations as a peg as discussed in my recent email.
Given holding a viable AGM Conference so close to Black Month is always
likely to present a problem, it would make sense to ensure that in future
the AGM is always held earlier in the year. e.g. first half of July.
