I have been doing some genealogical research and have hit a bit of a brick wall.
One of my distant relatives was listed on census and birth certs as a marine stone dealer - I have
been trying to find out exactly what this job was and there are several theories that have been put to
me, that marine stone dealing is:
a) Selling stones for ballast in canal boats, OR
b) Selling the calcium/silica rich waste products from iron foundries as aggregate/hardcore OR
c) Selling forms of limestone that have derived from marine deposits
Now I have not got a clue, have tried researching it without success, but have spotted that it is not an
uncommon profession in the mid 1800s.
Does anyone have any ideas?
