Introduction to Fundraising
Date: Thursday 27th September 2007
Time: 9.30am to 4.30pm
Venue: Association of Anaesthetists, 21 Portland Place, London W1B 1PY=20
This event is for staff and volunteers in museums, libraries, or =
archives who are new to fundraising or are considering a more strategic =
approach to fundraising.
=20
Fundraising is about communicating a beneficial idea to someone who has =
the means to make it happen.=20
Delivered by Hopkins Van Mil: Creative Connections, this day aims to =
provide you with ideas on how to fundraise, what to fundraise for and =
the funding opportunities available. This session is of particular =
interest for those who have had very little or no training on =
fundraising before and are keen to develop a sustainable approach to =
bringing in the monies our organisations need so badly.=20
You will learn to work in the context of a targeted fundraising strategy =
to maximise the effect of tailored funding applications. We will look at =
grant giving trusts and foundations, sponsorship, individual giving and =
donations. To assist your future fundraising experiences the day =
includes lots of practical exercises and opportunities to learn from =
other delegates.
Cost: =A375 for participants from the 33 London Boroughs; =A390 for =
participants from outside of London. One place for a volunteer member of =

=20

Time: 10.00am to 4.00pm
Venue: Bruce Castle Museum, Lordship Lane, London N17 8NU
=20
For all staff and volunteers in museums, libraries, and archives.
This workshop sets out to explain how the DDA and DED can work for you =
to assist you to increase the number of visitors/users of your =
facilities. At present, people with disabilities feel that museums and =
archives hold nothing much for them and frequently find libraries =
daunting to use. We will show you how simple adjustments can make you =
and your visitors far more relaxed, without spending huge amounts of =
cash on expensive equipment.
The day will cover:
=B7 Terminology - 'disabilities' and 'inclusiveness'
=B7 The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and Disability =
Equality Duty (DED)
=B7 Understanding - the issues, constraints, arguments, and =
opportunities
=B7 Good and bad practice
=B7 Relating potential to reality - looking at the collections, =
environments, and current facilities of museums, libraries and archives
=20
The session is mostly interactive, with a number of workshops throughout =
the day, and on-going support can be offered following the day, should =
anyone require it. =20
June Bretherton, from JBC Associates, has delivered disability awareness =
training to a number of organisations from the museums, libraries, and =

Subject: Communist Party of Great Britain Archive Microfilming Project
Where necessary please inform potential readers. Thanks Jo
The Labour History Archive and Study Centre (LHASC) in conjunction with
the Communist Party Archive Trust and Microform Academic Publishers are
undertaking a project to microfilm the Communist Party of Great Britain
Archives. This is part of the ongoing preservation and widening access
to collections undertaken by LHASC. As part of this process sections of
the CPGB archive collection will be unavailable for researchers while
being microfilmed. The majority of this work will take place from the 1
December 2007 and it is hoped that the project will be finished in
approximately six months. However in order to be able to provide a more
accurate timetable of the process a sample batch will be sent for
microfilming. The following material will be unavailable for
researchers beginning the week commencing 5 November for at least 2
weeks: CP/CENT/EC, CP/CENT/PC and CP/CENT/COMM. It is hoped that we
will be able to ensure a quick turn around time and apologise for any
inconvenience caused to researchers during this project. Any
researchers wishing to use the CPGB archive are advised to check the
website www.phm.org.uk <http://www.phm.org.uk/> for regular updates and
fuller timetables and to contact archive staff if arranging a visit.

Subject: Call for Proposals, ACA 2008 - extension of deadline
Apologies for cross-postings
Dear colleagues,
This is to let you know that the ACA 2008 Program Committee will
continue to accept submissions until next Friday, September 28, a week
after the original deadline. It won't be possible to extend this
deadline any further, because of the timing of the Program Committee
meeting.
As outlined in the call for proposals below, "Archives and the Digital
World" should be read fairly broadly, and we are certainly hoping to see
a broad range of submissions, not just "techie" ones. Sessions not
necessarily directly related to the theme will be considered too.
Use the online form to submit proposals:
http://www.archivists.ca/home/resource.aspx
I look forward to seeing many more submissions in the next two weeks -
don't miss the chance to present in beautiful New Brunswick!
Tim Hutchinson
Program Chair

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
ACA 2008 ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Fredericton, New Brunswick, June 12-14, 2008
"STEMMING THE TIDE: ARCHIVES AND THE DIGITAL WORLD"
The tide comes in and goes out twice a day. But the tides of digital
records and new technologies do not ebb and flow.
Has the archival community really faced the major preservation and access
issues related to digital formats? How is the "Google age" affecting
expectations for archival public services? Are archivists equipped to thrive
in a rapidly changing environment? What changes have archives implemented
to incorporate new technologies into archival management and what changes
still need to be made? Has the digital world expanded or contracted the
scope of archives?
The ACA 2008 Program Committee encourages proposals from a wide range of
perspectives related to the theme of archives and the digital world. Topics
could include:
. Digital preservation
. Digital reference
. Acquisition strategies for born-digital personal records
. Using the web to reach new audiences
. Digitization: moving from project to production
. Web 2.0 and archival services
. Electronic records management
. Changing nature of research
Join us in New Brunswick, land of tides, as we try to make headway against
the gale, and even to ride the tide.
SUBMITTING PROPOSALS:
We encourage individuals to submit fully developed session proposals
including confirmed participation of the speakers, while individual session
presentation proposals are also welcome. The conference sessions will be
determined based on the proposals received. Use the "Submit a Proposal,
2008" button on the Home page or Conference page of the ACA website at
http://www.archivists.ca/. Submitting your session proposal in electronic
form using this link is strongly encouraged.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS IS 28 SEPTEMBER 2007.
