Dear All
There are still a few places left for the Archives for London (AfL) visit
to the RAF Museums Archive Collections on Wednesday 12th September at
2.00pm
Cost: £5.00 Number of places: 15
The RAF Museum is the only national Museum devoted to aviation. The
Archive Collections are held at Hendon and managed by the Department of
Research & Information Services [DoRIS]. Active collecting began c.1970.
For the first twenty years of the Museums existence, its collecting policy
encompassed all aspects of aviation, with the result that some of the
material extends beyond the Museums current focus on the Royal Air Force.
Visitors will receive an introduction to the Archive Collections and will
be able to view a sample of their holdings. Topics of interest include
local history, genealogical research and the restoration/construction of
aircraft. DoRIS holds the papers not only of high ranking officers but
also those who have served in every branch of the Royal Air Force
regardless of rank. Notable collections include the logbooks of AM Sir
Harold (Mickey) Morgan Martin (who took part in the Dams Raid), and the
papers of Amy Johnson. Business records of British aviation companies are a
rich source for aircraft restorers and modellers who require aircraft
drawings to assist their projects. The Royal Aero Club archive contains
historical aeronautical licences with details and a photograph of the
licence holder which are invaluable to a family history researcher. Great
War casualty and medical records, and site plans of RAF installations are
also in demand by family and local historians. Visitors will also have the
chance to view elements of other collections on display within the Museum
during their visit.
The Museum is easily reached by car or public transport, and is situated at
the RAF Museum Grahame Park Way London NW9 5LL.
