I like what you have to say there about the tendency for moderns to
substitute meditation and such for the use of plants and to even
pooh-pooh plant use as a way to travel to the Sabbat at all. I think in
Europe at the time these flying ointments were allegedly used, people
would have a much greater familiarity with these plants, growing them
themselves and using them for medical problems, which would mediate a
lot of the fear of using them in a flying ointment. These plants would
not be friendly, but they would be a lot more familiar. I also think
there is some truth in a remark I saw once that people in earlier times
might have had a greater tolerance for alkaloids than we do.
I think it was you (or maybe Daniel Schulke?) who told me about Piobb's
versions of flying ointment. I ended up getting the book in French and
putting one of the formulas on my blog for comment.
Glad to hear you got moved.
Dan, do you know German? Because I don't, and I sure would like to get
the gist of that article. Would you consider posting about it on your
blog, for instance?
