I visited the Goslar smelter when it was working in 1979 - not sure if
anything exists there today. At the time it was working mainly on
Rammelsberg and local ores. I was impressed by the scale of the operation.
I seem to remember being told by our guides that the Fuehrer ordered a
duplicate to be built just in case the RAF destroyed it but I am not sure
where. A description was published in the Complex Metallurgy Proceedings,
Conference at Claustahall-Zellerfeld, Inst. Min. Metall., ca 1979. You
can probably get a reprint of the article from IOMMM library. The view at
the time was that the mine would close once they had achieved their 1,000
(or was it 2,000) years of operation.
