I just read something similar in which "Father Prout"
(Francis Mahony) rememebered the 1830s from the 1860s.
But my instant thought was that this was in some way
related to memories of the Modernists (Pound, for
instance, looking back) but can turn up nothing. Or
Marlowe in Conrad somewhere? So now I'm wondering if
it's one of those "quotations" that simply doesn't
have a single source.
