I should say we don't actually use the rpms
anymore...largely because be couldn't get srpms 2 or 3
year ago and decided it was easier to move to using using the tarballs
(actually a rpm packaged version of the tarball)
However, as Ewan as said, the srpms do normally provide a document
record of exactly how some thing has been built...and at least
provides a framework for rebuilding under a different os version/
machine type etc. I should say that we have srpms for all the other
non-RH supplied s/w the we use here...so we were fairly easily able to
rebuild things moving from SL3/i386 to SL4/x86_64.
Incidentally there are a lot of other sets of rpms with very complicated
dependencies....for example, try rebuilding the ~600 perl modules in
fedora_extras for sl4/x86_64....but it does work!
