Many years ago Alfred Harbage suggested that Shakespeare is a Culture
Hero, and noted that all such heroes have an obscure birth, but are
in reality high born. Jesus for example was not really the son of a
carpenter, but the son of god and a descendent of King David. And, of
course, Shakespeare is not the son of a glover, but really the Earl
of Oxford. Or some other high born person.
