The School of Biological Sciences invites applications for a tenured 
position as Lecturer in the area of Structural Biology

Location 	Auckland
Term of Contract 	Permanent
Closing Date 	15 September 2007
Position Overview 	Applications are invited for a tenured position as 
Lecturer in Structural Biology. Applicants should have state-of-the-art 
skills and a publication record in structural biology, preferably in 
X-ray crystallography. The School of Biological Sciences hosts a modern 
fully equipped X-ray crystallography laboratory, including 
crystallization robotics, as well as facilities for cryo-electron 
microscopy, access to high-field NMR, and access to synchrotron data 
collection.

The Structural Biology laboratory is also part of the Maurice Wilkins 
Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery, a national Centre of Research 
Excellence (www.mauricewilkinscentre.org). This offers collaborative 
opportunities in proteomics, cell biology and immunology, medicinal and 
synthetic chemistry and advanced biological modelling.

The appointee is expected to develop an internationally competitive 
research programme in structural biology, able to attract external 
research funding and graduate students. Collaboration with other staff 
is encouraged, and the appointee is also expected to participate in the 
School?s undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes.

The School of Biological Sciences currently employs 180 staff and 
supervises 120 PhD students. The School has modern laboratories and 
operates state-of-the-art equipment centres for genomics, proteomics, 
mass spectrometry and molecular structure determination (see SBS web 
site: http://www.sbs.auckland.ac.nz/). The University is situated in 
the heart of Auckland, a modern lively city with a beautiful harbour 
and beaches, a warm climate and easy access to many outdoor activities.

Job Description 	 Purpose Statement 	To undertake high quality teaching 
and research in the School
Responsible To 	Director of the School
Key Accountability Areas 	TEACHING
Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as required by the Director.
Supervise and assess student work.

RESEARCH
Initiate and undertake research in your area of expertise.
Submit research-funding applications to appropriate bodies.
Disseminate knowledge through scholarly research activities and publications.
Participate in conferences to advance research interests.
Supervise graduate students? research.
Work collaboratively with colleagues.

ADMINISTRATION
Undertake administration of paper(s).
Participate in University/School committees.
Adhere to the rules and regulations of the University.
Comply with the University?s obligation regarding equal employment 
opportunities and the Treaty of Waitangi.

Person Specification 	 Qualifications 	PhD
Experience 	Candidates must have experience as a postdoctoral 
researcher in structural biology and must have published in refereed 
international journals.
Attributes and Skills 	Candidates must have a robust knowledge of 
modern molecular techniques applicable to structure research. They must 
be experienced in the technical and computational aspects of protein 
structure determination.
