I was determined to carve a text out of Benoit Jacquot’s
most recent film and I knew there was to be only one
screening in the WASH DC area. A simple acrostic using
the original (French) title seemed feasible, though I considered
asking my friend Karen (whose conversational French is
superior to mine) to quarry lines she heard to supplement those
I expected to find within the subtitles. Somehow that possibility
never got articulated, and instead, at the last moment I realized
that the title in English would generate 14 lines. So I set myself
the nearly impossible task of writing 2 texts simultaneously. The
screen didn’t generate enough light for me to see my writing and I
never felt as if I were proceeding with any consecutiveness.
Despite the difficulties, I did quarry at least a line for each
letter in the titles (along with a number of outtakes). When I at-
tempted the next day to translate what I had written down in the dark
into a first draft, I was surprised at the ease by which each text
emerged. Also, the realization of my second conception seemed
to follow from the first. A simultaneity had become a serial text.
