Hi Olga,
there is an option in the realignment step to only create a mean image
for exactly the reason that you're asking. Therefore, you can avoid
reslicing and still have a mean EPI to coregister to. If you use spm5
you should be able to set it via the options, and I think the same goes
for spm2 (although I am not sure).
