Dear Caroline,
I used a USB memory stick with built in mic... it didn't need a lapel mic
and worked perfectly well for one person or a discussion. It has the
advantage of doulbing as an MP3 player etc... so there's more chance the
kids will keep it on them.
Not sure about supliers in South Africa but play.com do one which is
currently on special for 8 pounds (down from 35!)

It's a different model to mine... but this sort of device is I think just
what you need.
I'd strongly recommend anyone in the UK doing anything like this to grab
one fast... :) If that is out of budget, there is a 512MB version (this
one is 1GB) which is cheaper. The cheaper one may be all you need... but
at this price, I'd buy the extra space. Infact... I think I AM going to
buy another :)
