I, on the other hand, am surprised and pleased at the number of winners I
*have heard of. Even more so, at the number whose work I've actually read at
least some of, considering these are all American poets and I'm a Brit.
(Though I think we could once have laid claim to Thom Gunn.) And I am a
total fan of Amy Clampitt, and I don't care what any of the rest of you say.
So there!

Least deserving, after Daryl Hine:
Joseph Brodsky, Brad Leithauser, May Swenson, Eleanor Wilner, Richard
Howard, Edward Hirsch, Campbell McGrath.
I too am surprised at the number of winners I've never heard of.
Pleased to learn that Jay Wright, Allen Grossman, Thom Gunn, Ann
Lauterbach, Sandra Cisneros, Ishmael Reed, and C.D. Wright were among the
winners.
Unlike other awards, the shrouded process of selection prevents analysis
and/or predictions, though the choices of performance artists made sense to
me for a time (friends or allies of previous winners).
