Hi Glenn
As mentioned by Greta, it is difficult for the employer to do a great deal
about this if not clear employment policies about the issue. However, I
feel that the employer is right to query this if there are concerns about
the effects on the health of the employee for carrying out their normal
contracted duties. I am wondering what the sickness absence was for and
therefore whether stress/pressure etc played a part which can include
absences for minor URTIs, headaches etc. I was also wondering how much time
of annual leave and days off are spent on additional work as employees with
a unbalanced home/work life balance are likely to be more at risk of various
illnesses, including stress related absences. Although these are issues for
the manager to explore rather than OH.
From an OH point of view, it seems to me reasonable to give general advice
that work overload and persistently working during holidays and days off
over a prolonged period may have an impact on an employees health depending
on an individuals coping resources, resilience and demands etc of their
normal job (particularly if emotionally demanding type work).
Kind regards
Sandra
