CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
9th International Conference on Probabilistic Safety Assessment and
Management, 18-23 May 2008, Hong Kong, China (PSAM9)
SPECIAL SESSION ON NATECH HAZARD AND RISK ASSESSMENT
The impact of natural events on process plants as well as on infrastructures
for energy supply may cause severe accidents involving the release of
hazardous substances. These so-called NaTech disasters deserve particular
attention as they can result in multiple and simultaneous hazardous
materials releases. In addition, it is expected that climate change will
increase the frequency and intensity of some natural events likely to
trigger industrial disasters. Thus, a requirement emerges for the
development of tools for the analysis of the hazard and the risk due to
NaTech events in the process industry.
A specific session on this topic will be organized by the European
Commission’s Joint Research Centre, Institute for the Protection and
Security of the Citizen, and the University of Bologna, Departments of
Chemical and Structural Engineering, at the PSAM 9 conference in Hong Kong
from 18 to 23 May 2008. The session will aim to fill the gap between the
fields of natural and technological risk assessment and to bring the experts
of the different disciplines towards the development of a common language
and of common tools for NaTech risk analysis, assessment, prevention and
mitigation.
Contributions on the following topics will be most welcome:
- Analysis of NaTech accidents
- Methods and tools to assess NaTech hazard and risk
- Multi-criteria and multi-risk assessment methods for NaTech analysis
- Assessment of the vulnerability of technological facilities and systems to
natural hazards, including domino effects
- Requirements for Natech-specific disaster prevention and preparedness
plans, as well as targeted safety regulations
Abstracts should be submitted by 8 September, 2007 using the conference
website (http://www.psam9.org/) and following the instructions reported
therein.
