POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
=====================
Electronically excited states of molecules at metal surfaces
------------------------------------------------------------
Applications (deadline Friday 28 September 2007) are invited for a
postdoctoral position for theoretical research on the dynamics of
chemical reactions involving molecules in an excited electronic state
interacting with a metal surface, with non-adiabatic coupling to the
molecule's ground state and with embedding in the metal's
electron-hole pair continuum. The research will be carried out at the
Leiden Institute of Chemistry and Leiden Observatory of Leiden
University, The Netherlands, in the framework of a collaboration
between the Theoretical Chemistry group (Dr. R.A. Olsen,
Prof. G.J. Kroes) and the Astrochemistry group (Prof. E.F. van
Dishoeck), with funding from the Netherlands Organization for
Scientific Research NWO on a TOP-project "The role of excited
electronic and vibrational states in chemical reactions on
surfaces".
The framework of the research is time-dependent density functional
theory, with focus on developing (i) methods to calculate the
excitation spectrum of a molecule on a metal surface, (ii) methods for
isolating a selected excitation localised on the molecule, within the
calculated continuous spectrum of the metal it is adsorbed to, (iii)
methods to obtain non-adiabatic coupling elements for molecule-metal
surface systems, and (iv) new exchange-correlation kernels that are
able to accurately model charge-transfer excitation for
molecule-surface systems.
The project will be supervised by Dr. Roar A. Olsen. It will involve a
close collaboration with Prof. Angel Rubio (San Sebastian, Spain).
The initial appointment will be for a period of 1 year but funding is
available for an additional period of 2 years. Applicants should have
(or be about to obtain) a PhD degree in theoretical/computational
chemistry or physics. Good communication skills, experience of
software and method development and density functional calculations
are essential. Earliest starting date is 1 December 2007. To be
considered for the project, applicants should send an application
letter, CV including a brief statement of research experience, and
publication list, and should arrange themselves for three letters of
reference to be sent to Dr. Roar A. Olsen
([log in to unmask]). The deadline for receiving the
material at Leiden is Friday 28 September 2007.
