William Daniel Conybeare (1787-1857) and the Development of the Geological
Sciences: A One-Day Symposium
It is generally considered that the work of the geologist W.D. Conybeare
deserves greater attention than it has received from historians of the earth
sciences, and bearing in mind that this year marks the 150th anniversary of his
death, we are holding a one-day symposium to reconsider Conybeare’s life and
work. Conybeare was part of the highly important Oxford group of geologists in
the 1810s, and also an early member of the Geological Society. He is credited
with inspiring and mentoring many of his colleagues and contemporaries,
including William Buckland and Adam Sedgwick, appointed Professors of Geology
at Oxford and Cambridge respectively in the 1810s. The aim of this conference
is therefore to examine Conybeare's work and career, and further, through the
prism of his work, to explore wider themes in the history of the earth sciences
in the early nineteenth century.
Speakers:
Jon Hodge (University of Leeds)
Jack Morrell (University of Leeds)
Ralph O’Connor (University of Aberdeen)
Martin Rudwick (University of Cambridge)
Hugh Torrens (Keele University)
Leucha Veneer (University of Leeds)
Many thanks,
Leucha Veneer
