Dear Marjorie,
I haven't yet discovered the meaning of this distinctive gesture. I have consulted a number of
works on "gesture", but they are mostly limited to a general interpretive realm of gesture as a
narrative motif, rather than specific sorts of ecclesiastical gestures. I thought for a bit that it
might be related to exorcism, but I have so far not been able to find any evidence that I was
on the right track there. So, in short, I'm still perplexed and still looking. Any leads gratefully
accepted.
Cheers,
Jim
