The National Museums Online Learning Project, funded by the Treasury’s Invest to Save initiative, is a significant new partnership project involving 9 national museums (British Museum, Imperial War Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Natural History Museum, Royal Armouries, Sir John Soane’s Museum, Tate, The Wallace Collection and the Victoria and Albert Museum as Lead Member).
The project aims to get partner museum websites better used, engaging new audiences and transforming the way they think about and use existing digital collections. The project is developing a range of innovative and exciting online learning resources across the nine websites for pupils, teachers, and lifelong learners. These resources will provide greater access and usage of the museum partners’ online collections, utilising new technologies to encourage and support user participation.
To aid the user experience we are currently prototyping two types of federated searching across a selection of partner collections. These are OpenSearch (http://www.opensearch.org/) and the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH - http://www.openarchives.org/pmh/). We are at the early stages of prototyping both of these processes of federated searching. Once we have completed the prototyping period we will evaluate the outcomes and then decide on the next step.
I would be interested to hear from anyone on the group who may have had experience in implementing either OpenSearch or OAI-PMH. These replies will complement our evaluation and support us in reaching the right conclusions about which process(es) of searching to advance.
Many thanks,
Terry Makewell
