I read something very similar on a blog last month in which the
presence of the big corporations was given as a reason for people
starting to abandon Second Life - they don't want to have a virtual
life where the same big companies as in real life take control of how
things look and what is available. A further reason given was that as
soon as the marketing people from the big companies moved in, Second
Life started to lose its street cred.
Maybe museums and the like being in Second Life can add more
credibility to SL and help to attract the next generation of people.
Whilst it may not be worth investing lots of money that could be
better spent on a good, old-fashioned, content-rich museum web site,
it may be worth some experimentation to provide an alternative
approach to some themes or aspects of collections, something visually
edgier than the main web site perhaps.
