- A tour of The Royal Society of Medicine Library:
22nd August 2.30pm to 4.30pm
The Royal Society of Medicine is an independent, apolitical organisation,
founded 200 years ago. The Library is one of the largest postgraduate
biomedical libraries in Europe, with a total collection of over half a
million volumes dating back to the 15th century. The Library acquires
current postgraduate clinical and research material in all the main
specialities of medicine, as well as areas such as medical history,
biography, health statistics and health management.
The visit will include a tour of the Library and a viewing of some of the
rare books.
Places are limited to 12 so book early to avoid disappointment.

- A visit to the University of Reading Special Collections Service:
Thursday 6th September 2.30pm to 4.30pm
The Special Collections Service gives access to the University of Reading
Library's special collections of rare books, manuscripts, archives and
other materials. Two of these are recognised as being of national and
international significance, holding Designated status by the MLA (Museums,
Libraries and Archives Council) - the Beckett Collection and Records of
British publishing and printing. The service is run jointly by the
University of Reading Library and the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL),
itself a Designated collection. For more details about the Special

As the Special Collections Service is located in the same building as the
Museum of English Rural Life (MERL), there is also the opportunity to

Reading Station has extensive rail links, eg London Paddington in 25
minutes and Oxford in 35 minutes. Buses to the London Road Campus
(adjacent to MERL, where the Special Collections Service is located) are
available from Reading Station. Alternatively, it is about a 25 minute
walk from Reading Station to the Special Collections Service. Car parking
facilities are available for people wishing to drive. For more detailed
