I will not be at the conference, but here is a report about the PREMIS
work, which should be of interest.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies (PREMIS) report
August 2007

The PREMIS maintenance activity is responsible for maintaining,
supporting, and coordinating future revisions to the PREMIS data
dictionary and is hosted at the Library of Congress. The Preservation
Metadata: Implementation Strategies Working Group, convened by OCLC and
RLG, initially developed the PREMIS data dictionary as a specification
with the goal of creating an implementable set of "core" preservation
metadata elements, with broad applicability within the digital
preservation community. Supporting XML schemas allow for implementation of
the core metadata element set and are maintained in the Network
Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress.
The PREMIS Data Dictionary was made available in May 2005 to begin a
period of trial use. At the time, it was announced that the data
dictionary and schemas would remain stable for at least a year, after
which revisions may be made based on results of experimentation. Since
its publication, there has been a great deal of interest and the
specification has earned two awards, the 2005 Digital Preservation Award
in the UK (part of the Conservation Awards) and the 2006 Society of
American Archivists. Preservation Publication Award.

The maintenance activity is intended to:
	*Maintain a permanent Web presence for the PREMIS Data Dictionary
and related materials;
	*Serve as a central destination for PREMIS-related information,
announcements, and resources;
	*Facilitate communication between PREMIS implementers via
electronic communications (such as listservs and wikis);
	*Coordinate future revisions of the Data Dictionary and XML
schema;
	*Raise awareness of the value and uses of PREMIS information.

The maintenance activity consists of the following:
	*A PREMIS Implementers. Group (PIG), which discusses
implementation issues, mainly through a listserv hosted by LC
	*A PREMIS Editorial Committee, with current membership from LC,
OCLC, Florida Center for Library Automation, British Library, National
Archives of Scotland, National Library of Australia, Library and Archives
Canada, University of Gvttingen, ExLibris, and Los Alamos National
Laboratories. The PREMIS EC sets directions and priorities for PREMIS
development in order to ensure that sufficient resources are available to
support needed initiatives and achieve PREMIS goals, is responsible for
coordinating and approving future revisions of the Data Dictionary and XML
schema, and acts as information providers about PREMIS in their geographic
areas.
	*A Managing Agency to coordinate the developments in the PREMIS
"back office": hosting the Web site, handling inquiries, raising
awareness, and maintaining/moderating the discussion lists. LC assumes
these responsibilities, working in conjunction with the Editorial
Committee.

Recent activities include:
	*Conducting PREMIS tutorials. These one and a half or one day
tutorials have been presented in Glasgow, Boston, Stockholm, Albuquerque,
and Washington, DC to train potential users in the PREMIS data model, use
of PREMIS semantic units, and implementation issues.
	*Two consultancies commissioned by LC. One is entitled "Rights in
the PREMIS Data Model" and looks at the various definitions of rights, the
state of rights metadata, and surveys legislative actions taking place in
many nations that will provide a legal standing for digital preservation
activities. The other is "Implementing the PREMIS Data Dictionary: a
survey of approaches", which explores how institutions have implemented
the PREMIS semantic units, with an analysis on how the PREMIS core fits
into the functions of a preservation repository.
	*Extensive work by the Editorial Committee analyzing comments
submitted about the PREMIS data model and PREMIS semantic units since the
release of the data dictionary. A revision of both the data dictionary and
schemas will be prepared and made available by the end of 2007.
	*Analysis of how to use PREMIS with the Metadata Encoding and
Transmission Standard (METS). This will result in the documentation of
best practices (an initial draft was released in July 2007).
	*The establishment of a PREMIS Implementation Registry to detail
current implementations
	*A listing of PREMIS related tools was prepared
