I have just applied for a job by email to an agency (email of application
plus a cv - advertised on CWJobs - no formal application process).
I have received a response.
"Thank you for your email which has been received at one of our
advertisement response addresses. Due to current market conditions we
receive very large numbers of replies to our advertisements. We regret it is
not possible to reply individually in every case but assure you that your
application will be considered. Should it be successfully shortlisted we
will contact you soon."
There is nothing to say what will be done with my cv - and no individual to
contact so that I can ask them what they intend to do with my cv and to get
rid of it, say, if I am not to be interviewed.
I might point out that generally when one applies to an agency the email
address that is given is specific to the job and doesn't relate to the
consultant. When the job is no longer being advertised the email no longer
works. It is true that there is a phone number for contact, but the response
by email never or rarely gives an email address that one can follow up to
enquire by email about the progress of the application - naturally the
systems are run for the benefit of the agencies rather than the benefit of
the applicant.
In fact, CWJobs is the only site that I know of which does, in fact, on
their job application tracker give a personal email address to contact.
I am able to often follow up because I do have emails of the consultant from
my past dealings with them, searching on the Internet, or working out by
comparison with other email addresses from the same agency.
I think that the whole situation is totally unsatisfactory - but I am used
to dealing with it.
For instance if I submit my cv to a named consultant at a particular
well-known agency I always just receive a pro-forma response from the
agency. If only a computer ever reads my emails how would I ask them to
remove my cv from their database?
I might add that my cv is on a number of computer sites - CWJobs, Jobsite
etc - where any legitimate company can get hold of my cv and then contact
me, so that my concerns are not great.
It is at the interface between Data Protection and Customer/Applicant Care
(for want of a better phrase).
