Chris Schwarz, Founder and Director of the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow www.galiciajewishmuseum.org sadly passed away on Monday aged 58. He had been suffering from cancer.
For Chris, a brilliant photographer, the important thing was always to maintain a positive view of life. This philosophy came across particularly well in his Traces of Memory: the ruins of Jewish Civilization in Polish Galicia (co-authored with Professor Jonathan Webber). As the publisher's note points out, he had an up-beat ending with photographs of people involved in 'making memory' within the present day and, as a result, offering hope for the future. (See http://www.littman.co.uk/cat/pop/webber-traces.html )
On receiving a diagnosis of cancer five years ago, Chris had worked and published both in Britain and Japan. It was here that encounters with Buddhism were to have a lasting influence. In his latter years, Chris left his home on the South Coast to make a contribution to the resurrection of Jewish memory in Poland. In particular, the museum he founded, in line with his approach to life, was received with both critical and popular acclaim. Indeed, this is a fitting epitaph.
Chris will be mourned by his many Polish friends, including those in the Jewish community. A memorial service at the museum tomorrow. He leaves family in Canada and the UK.
Regards
Victor Seedman
