As you may know, Harriet Harman, the new Minister for Women has recently announced her priorities which are:
* Supporting the care of older and vulnerable relatives by families, particularly as they bring up children.
* Tackling violence against women and improving the way society deals with women who commit crimes.
* Empowering black and minority ethnic women to build cohesion within and between communities.
We are delighted to announce that Harriet Harman has asked the Women?s National Commission to consult on these priorities. This sends an important signal regarding the vital role women's organisations play in the UK. We welcome this opportunity to represent your voices to the Minster for Women to influence the objectives she and Barbara Follett MP will be taking forward.
The Minister is keen to for you to give your views on whether you agree that these priorities form the right approach and how best they can be advanced. A consultation document published on 17 July sets out the wider context. 'Priorities for the Ministers for Women' (Command Paper, CM 7183). Download paper from here <http://www.official-documents.gov.uk/document/cm71/7183/7183.asp> .

We are therefore pleased to announce that an online consultation will be available on the Women?s National Commission?s website www.thewnc.org.uk <http://www.thewnc.org.uk/> from today. I know you will join with me in welcoming this opportunity to give your opinions and voices directly to the Minister for Women and to be part of the way forward with this work. We invite you to pass the news of this consultation along to all your networks and other colleagues in order to gain a truly representative response. I am very keen for this consultation to be as inclusive as possible and I would be grateful if you could pass this link on to those women who may not usually take part in consultations, particularly those whose voices are often hidden within communities. Please encourage them to be involved in this consultation.
The online consultation will end on 14th September 2007 and the WNC will be collating the findings and presenting them to the Minister at the end of September.
We sincerely look forward to receiving your views on these new priorities and hope that you will embrace this chance to influence Government policy.
Yours Sincerely,
The Baroness Joyce Gould of Potternewton
Interim-Chair of the Women's National Commission
