From Conrad Taylor - CAS members are invited to attend:
Participate in the KIDMM MetaKnowledge Mash-up!
(Putting the word "information" back into IT.)
BCS-KIDMM extends a warm invitation to the BCS Specialist Group
community to
join in a "sharing and thinking" day at the BCS London meeting rooms
on 17
September 2007.
KIDMM stands for "Knowledge, Information, Data and Metadata
Management" and
is an experimental knowledge community, with participation from about
a dozen
BCS Specialist Groups, some BCS Forums, and a number of non-BCS
organisations
which have overlapping interests.
Our "MetaKnowledge Mash-up" is a gathering to compare and put
together what
we know about the use of ICT in managing data and information
resources and
human knowledge: a task which is rapidly becoming the pre-eminent use to
which society puts computers. Yet we realise that the task of building
fit-for-purpose Information Systems crucially depends on expertise from
beyond the ICT engineering
community: e.g. from such disciplines as management, publishing,
librarianship and information sciences.
Our morning session will hear a number of contributions exposing such
issues
as information search and retrieval, data and text mining, database
integration, classification using controlled and "folk" vocabularies,
geospatial information, application of metadata etc.
The afternoon sessions are designed to be more participatory, and will
examine issues of information and knowledge management within
organisations,
professional societies etc. This will include examination of how an
organisation (such as the BCS)
can best organise, classify and make discoverable its own knowledge
resources... and how Web 2.0 style technology infrastructures can
support the
evolution of knowledge communities and communities of practice.
At a time when within the BCS and especially its Specialist Groups
community
we are being invited to consider the concept of "knowledge
communities", we
hope that the MetaKnowledge Mash-up will not only be of interest in
itself,
but will also throw up ideas of use to the Society and the Autumn SG
Assembly
on 1 November 2007.
The Mash-up is being subsidised by the BCS, but there will be a
charge of £20
for the day to cover lunch etc.
