MRC Epidemiology Unit, Cambridge

Data and Information Management Staff Required

The MRC Epidemiology Unit was set up in October 2003 to study the genetic
and environmental determinants of obesity, diabetes and related metabolic
disorders. For further information about the Unit please visit
www.mrc-epid.cam.ac.uk <http://www.mrc-epid.cam.ac.uk/>

We are looking to recruit 1 full-time permanent and 1 full-time short term 3
year data and information management staff members, to work in an expanding
data management team supporting the work of the Unit. Both post holders can
expect to be involved in a wide range of computational issues and will be
line-managed by a senior data manager who will provide the teams overall
direction. Post holders will be strong team players with excellent
communication skills at all levels. They will be responsible for providing
expert advice on the management and processing of data, contributing towards
the dissemination of research results and will each be expected to
contribute to the Unit's information and statistical structures.

Data Manager - Permanent position - Band 5

Reference: 2007-486

This post will focus on the processing and standardisation of scientific
data and its associated management through the development of appropriate
software. Working on data from all of the Units' programmes of research, the
post holder's initial emphasis will be on providing expertise to ensure
legacy software remains operational and to develop these further. The post
holder will be expected to work closely with investigating scientists and
other data management staff to link scientific processes to unit data and
databases.

Data Manager - 3 year InterAct EU grant-funded position - Band 4

Reference: 2007-446

This post will focus on the coordination of data between a large number of
collaborating partners throughout the EU and a number of work packages. Much
of this work will involve genetic data and the post holders'
responsibilities will include the preparation of a database suitable for
whole genome association study analyses. The role involves ensuring that
data is transferred between the grants work packages, a central database,
the central coordinating centre (based in the unit) and various analysis
committees in a timely manner to ensure the smooth completion of all the
required funded research. This post is grant-funded and is available for
three years.

Both posts require a BSc (or equivalent) qualification in a Science,
Computation or Mathematics based subject, ideally with some related subject
experience in software development, large volume data handling and/or
database development. In addition for the InterAct post holder some
knowledge or understanding of genetics and/or bioinformatics would be
valuable. These posts would be suitable for those who are either recent
graduates or who have a number of years work experience.

The starting salary for the Band 4 position will be in the range of £24,993
- £30,945 and that of the Band 5 position will be in the range £19,238 -
£26,555 per annum depending on qualifications and skillset. This is
supported by a flexible pay and reward scheme and optional MRC final salary
Pension Scheme. Working hours will be 36 per week.

For further information and an application pack please contact the
Recruitment team by email: [log in to unmask] or by phone:

number as listed above in a covering letter and include a CV with the names
and addresses of two professional referees who can be contacted prior to
interview. Applicants may apply for more than one post using a single

Closing date: 31 August 2007.
