The post
The Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL) is the leading industrial health and
safety research facility in the UK. Working in a wide range of
multi-disciplinary teams, our aim is to improve the health and safety of
working life. The Mathematical Sciences Unit (MSU) at HSL has increased
its business in 2006/07. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement to
recruit appropriate specialist staff to meet existing and future business
demands. Moreover, the demand for Epidemiology and Statistics shows no
sign of abating, even in the medium-to-long-term, and thus, there is a
very pressing need to recruit appropriate specialist staff.
Your role
As an Epidemiologist you will work with technical specialists across many
disciplines and you can expect to develop your epidemiological skills
whilst contributing directly to improving the lives of working people. You
will be expected to work on a diverse portfolio of projects within the
occupational health & safety sector and be involved in all stages of
on-going epidemiological work as well as developing new ideas and the
status of the section.
Person requirements
You must have:
A good first degree in epidemiology in a numerate subject with experience
of epidemiological analyses or a post graduate degree, with substantial
epidemiological content.
Alternatively, another epidemiological qualification at an equivalent
level or substantial epidemiological experience in commercial or academic
environment.
In addition, be able to:
demonstrate sound knowledge and expertise in the field of
epidemiology/statistics,
work collaboratively and flexibly as part of a team,
communicate well with the ability to contribute and respond
constructively,
deliver quality results to deadlines,
plan, organise and prioritise work effectively,
show creativity and encourage new ideas, making sound decisions and
judgements.
Ideally you will have some practical experience of relevant specialist
statistical/epidemiological packages such as SPSS, Stata or SAS.
