Hi Jim,
-
Your book 'The Pound in Your Pocket 1870-1970' sounds fantastic, could
you send me further details of it including ISBN. So I can pass it the
details to the committee.

Thanks

Becki Walker
Assistant Museum Officer
Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery.

To Chris et al:

Many thanks; I have sometimes found that those 'How We Used To Live'
sort of books can contain this sort of information. They're published in

decades, ie The Thirties, the Forties etc and are often shelved in the
junior sections of libraries, round about Dewey 940.

I have a good book (Possibly a candidate for the Firstbase Database?)
called 'The Pound In Your Pocket 1870 - 1970' by Peter Wilsher (Cassell
and Company, London, 1970) which might help. I am sending you a copy of
the chapter called 'The Pound in 1931', plus a grocery bill from the
'The Pound in 1949' chapter. There are prices are for non-specific goods,

such as 'meat', 'margarine' etc, rather than Bovril, Golden Syrup, Camp
Coffee, Marmite etc.

I realise that this exchange of views has also brought 'the co-op' into
the discussions. As Christine has pointed out, the People's History
Museum has large 'co-op' collections and I'm the resident 'co-op'
obsessive. Much of our packaging can be reasonably accurately dated and
it was common for prices to be included in the artwork at times when
prices tended to stay steady. So if you just need to know something like

the cost of a packet of 'C.W.S. Crumpsall Cream crackers' between 1930
and 1940, we can probably help you out.

Shop windows in photographic collections can also help, where there are
often accompanying signs stating the prices of goods.

Hope this is of help

Best wishes

Jim Garretts, Keeper, the People's History Museum.
