Teaching Race and Ethnicity: Education, Politics and Practice
WHERE AND WHEN? Friday 28th September 2007, Jury's Inn, Broad Street,
Birmingham, B1 2HQ
WHAT? The teaching of race and ethnicity has evolved and changed radically
over the past three decades. This process of change has raised important
questions about what it is that we teach in this field of academic
scholarship, about the relationship between teaching and research, and about
the nature of the reality that is being examined. In this paper I want to
take the opportunity to reflect back on my own experiences of thinking about
and developing my teaching in this field and the range of issues that have
helped to shape certain choices and directions that have shaped my teaching.
In addition I would like to look at the issue that has been raised by some
commentators about the need to define the boundaries of what we teach and
the shifting conceptual and empirical agendas that have helped to influence
both research and teaching on race and ethnicity. I will then conclude by
exploring some of the challenges that are coming to the fore at the present
time and how we can try to respond to them.
