“Brain Imaging of Second Language Learning performance/proficiency in
phonetics/pronunciation/speech production.”
This job opportunity and financial support could be interesting for
students aiming at and preparing a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and
Brain Imaging of Second Language Acquisition and / or interested in
gaining experience in brain imaging and fMRI / MRI processing and
statistical analysis.
A position funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) is available from September 2007 (or
October at latest) at the Section for Experimental MR of the CNS, Dep.
of Neuroradiology, University Clinic of Tübingen.
The candidate will work within a project with functional magnetic
resonance imaging (fMRI) on the brain activation and correlates of
second language pronunciation. The topic of research is related to
speech production, second language learning, articulation, and
individual differences in language learning ability. The ideal candidate
would have existing knowledge about fMRI (SPM processing) and holds a
scientific degree (Master) in psychology, neurosciences, computer
science, cognitive science, statistics, applied mathematics, biology,
language sciences or related disciplines. Good data handling skills,
computer skills and programming skills are of high advantage (e.g.
MATLAB, Stimulus Presentation Softwares, Linux).
Duties and scientific gains: fMRI and structural MR recordings, data
management, data analysis (fMRI with SPM5 software), reporting of
results (possibility for publishing).
The position will run for two years with possible extension (note:
extension is depending on pending decisions about follow up projects).
Salary is according to the German Federal pay scale (full post graduate
student’s position, or, scientific student assistant (geprüfte Hiwi
Stelle)).
