I'm interested to hear these assessments too, but perhaps I can add another point for discussion. My sense, like Peter's, is that Scarisbrick's 1968 biography of Henry VIII is still the standard. Why have there been so many biographies (popular and scholarly) of Elizabeth but so few of Henry? Did Scarisbrick really say it all, or is another biography overdue?
