Our thanks to the list for these suggestions: Sidney's "Letter" and
Spenser's "Stemmata" are certainly both intriguing possibilities
for "Leycester sa Genealogie". The difficulty is that the entry appears to
record a work in French: the library catalogue has 5000+ entries, and the
language of entries consistently reflects the language of the work
catalogued. (About 1/4 of the entries are books in English; otherwise, Latin
predominates; but the Sidneys also owned more than a thousand books in French,
Italian, or Spanish, and some books in Portuguese and German). The exception
is German, a language with which the cataloguer was unfamiliar: but in those
cases the entry offers a descriptive or Latin title concluding with the
note 'Germanice'. Of course, the language of some entries is ambiguous,
depending on the words it contains, and esp. if some words are truncated. But
this entry does not appear to reflect a work in English, though it might very
well be a translation of one. Please feel free to contact us directly with
any thoughts, or if you have any questions about the Sidney library.
