Hi Kate,
Kenya is PAL format I think so will be ok buying a camara here in the UK.
I would always get a mic socket so that you have the option of using different types of directional mics down the line. I don't think Sony cameras tend to have mic sockets ? not sure
I would also go for tapes always. This way you can hand over responsibility for the tapes to participants, a way of handing over the stick. Also it might be a safety net should something go wrong with the camera, perhaps I just like them because that is what I'm used to.
I hope this helps. I am not an expert though! I think go for what you feel comfortable with using.

Subject: buying a camcorder help
Hi all
I wonder if anyone could give me some speedy advice about what camcorder to buy for starting off PV activities for my research in Kenya please. A couple of you at the meeting suggested a Panasonic PVGS180 but that now seems to be unavailable. The PVGS320 is but doesn't have a mike socket. Two of the local camera shops recommended a Sony DCRSR52 (light and less bits to get dust in) but it uses touch screen controls which looked a bit fiddly for mass hands to be using. So would you recommend hard disk or mini tape? Any particular current model around £300?
I either need to make a decision and get it by Friday or leave it till my second trip to Kenya in October. I've learnt a lot in a week but still not enough to make a confident decision!
Thanks
Kate
