As stress is a personal perception, any manager would need to do this really with each individual to be valid, this in itself is time consuming so might be easier to give everyone a questionnaire. Also you can then measure teams/depts
I have been using the HSE tool for the past 2 years with the local authority including Education, it is fairly concise to use and has everything you need to follow the process, guidance about the questionnaire, excel programme, results, and then ideally a focus group to clarify or challenge your results, although it does need good preparation beforehand with the manager as it can be rather a blunt tool particularly if there are problems which are going to be unearthed. We have had comments from the Education sector that some of the questionnaire isn't relevant ie having a choice of when you can take a break, but that is known. The questionnaire part is really like taking the general temperature whereas the focus group allows you to dig below the surface and find out what the day to day issues are and how things could be changed/improved.
Somewhere I do have some info that came through from a company that have adopted the HSE process but modifed it in their own language and sell it privately, it doesn't look that much simpler though than the HSE one which is free and downloadable.
It does also provide you with information about what next steps could be advised as a result of the 'risk assessment' the idea then being that you reassess later on (1 to 2 yrs)to see if things ahve changed. The whole thing is also pretty labour intensive and does take up considerable time, so resource issues/costing need to be taken into account, and managers need support to do it.
As a result of using this process we have now incorporated the 6 management standards as sectors in our OH management referral process for sickness absence, so as part of the assessment we ask the employee what problems they might have in these areas, demands, control, support, relationships, role and change. This enables OH to feed back more specifically to managers areas of concern, ie if they are not clear about the boundaries of their role, or there are inappropriate behaviours in the team etc.

Di
