In celebration of the late David Bick’s distinguished, highly
individual, and influential contribution to British mining history, the
Welsh Mines Society is arranging a two-day meeting on 29th/ 30th
September 2007.
On the Saturday there will be a one-day indoor conference at the
Mellington Hall Hotel, Church Stoke, Powys, SY15 6HX, on the border of
South Shropshire and Montgomeryshire (Powys).
On the Sunday there will be a walk, led by members of the Society, to
the Bryntail and Pen-y-clun mines, near Llanidloes (Refreshments not
provided). At the latter site the Welsh Mines Preservation Trust has
been instrumental in arranging for comprehensive repair work to the
19th century engine-house, which should be completed by the time of our
visit.
The title of the conference will be: ‘The Lode of History’. It is
hoped that the speakers will include David James, Simon Hughes, Simon
Dominy, Roger Proetheroe Jones, Ivor Brown, Petrer Claughton, Simon
Timberlake, Rob Vernon and George Hall on a wide range of topics
The fee for the weekend’s proceedings is expected to be £25. This will
include morning coffee, tea, and biscuits, buffet lunch, and afternoon
tea at the hotel, together with a printed copy of the proceedings,
which will be forwarded to you by post. Besides the conference room
those attending will have the exclusive use of two sitting rooms, as
well as the hotel’s larger public hall, so that there will be ample
opportunities for social and research discussion.

money now, but they would appreciate payment by September 1, 2007.
There will be a dinner at Mellington Hall on the Saturday evening,
consisting of three courses and coffee, which will cost about £17·50 If
you wish to attend this additional function please advise George Hall
by letter, postcard, or fax, at least one month in advance, but do not
send a deposit. Pay on the night.

Mellington Hall Hotel provides sites and facilities for camping and
caravans.
The GR. of the entrance to the hotel drive is : SO 253 930. Partners
and friends who are not interested in mining history may like to know
that the hotel is in a beautiful and secluded situation, with its own
gardens and extensive grounds (through which the Offa’s Dyke path
passes), with particularly fine trees, and views of the South
Shropshire hills. The Stiperstones and the Longmynd are near at hand;
Ironbridge, Ludlow, and Powis Castle are easy drives.
