Send by Prof. H.J. Cook , Wellcome Trust Centre at UCL ([log in to unmask])
The United Nations and International and Global Health (Dates of meeting:
10th, 11th and 12th of July 2007)
Venue: The Arrabida Convent in Portugal
Organisers: Prof. Cristiana Bastos (University of Lisbon, Portugal), Dr.
Sanjoy Bhattacharya (Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine, UK)
and Prof. Elizabeth Fee (National Library of Medicine, USA)
Sponsors: Fundacao Oriente (Portugal); Institute of Social Sciences,
University of Lisbon (Portugal), and the Wellcome Trust Centre for the
History of Medicine at UCL (United Kingdom)
During the past few years there has been a growing demand from scholars and
practitioners of international health for deeper knowledge about the history
of the main multilateral agencies, particularly United Nations' bodies like
the World Health Organization, in order to help clarify the future
directions of a field that is undergoing remarkable transformations. In
addition, a number of historians of medicine and public health have been
moving beyond scholarly audiences and participating actively in discussions
with policy makers. This meeting will contribute to these developments by
bringing together a worldwide group of leading historians of medicine and
WHO officers (both current and retired). The conference will have
presentations by historians about the contributions made by United Nations'
agencies, particularly the WHO, in fostering national, regional and global
health networks and programmes. The meeting will also allow the discussion
and critique of two draft publications arising from the "Global Health
Histories Initiatives" launched by the World Health Organization, namely
"Global Health: A History of the World Health Organization" and "WHO: The
Third Ten Years, 1968-1978".
