medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Maddy
This is useful data indeed. How do these stats stack up against Giles,
Mary Mag. et al? It would be very interesting to know what your
student's comparative data demonstrates.
Best wishes
Graham

My student says:
' The database indicates that of the 58 English hospitals dedicated to
Leonard (for which the type of patients can be identified), 45 of them
were for lepers - none of the St. Leonard hospitals in Scotland are
known to have been leprosaria, and there were no hospitals at all
dedicated to this saint in Wales. The association with leper hospitals
continues from the 11th century through to the 15th century, although
the number of hospital dedications begins to decline in the 14th
century. The trend in north-eastern England and the East Midlands is not
as strong as in the rest of the country though, with only 14 of the 23
St. Leonard hospitals being for lepers (compared to 31 of the 35
hospitals in the rest of England).'
That looks to me lke quite a marked correlation, and one for which I
cannot see any reason in the life of the saint as we have it at present.
I still can't track down the reference to links between the Templars and
the cult of St Leonard so I think that mey be a non-starter as well.

Not hanging around in clouds, but... It is a commonplace for demons
to be hovering around moribund evil people, i.e. the Rich Man of the
parable, waiting for the soul in the form of a small child to exit
the body through the mouth. If you would like pictures, let me know
and I can provide some links.
