Playing for Laughs: On comedy in Performance
A Symposium at De Montfort University, 9th and 10th February 2008
With tensions concerning the complexities of comedy and humour increasing in an age of "correctness", comedy "as" performance and "in" performance is a richly diverse area of increasing academic attention. We all know what makes us laugh, but the "how" and "why" of this is in need of a re-visit.
We warmly invite proposals for papers (20 min. max.) approaching these concerns from practitioners, performers and academics that deal with comedy in performance across a wide spectrum of performance media from theatre, stand-up, television/film and/or radio.
Papers may include (but not limited to):
* Comic representations or representations of the comic
* Comic writing or writing comedy for performance
* Contexts of comedy in performance (historical, cultural, social and/or political)
Proposals (of no more than 250 words) should be sent to [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> by 31st October 2007. Informal enquiries or expressions of interest can also be sent to the conference convenors.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Roger Clegg ([log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> )

This symposium is hosted in association with Leicester Comedy Festival, 9th-24th February 2008 (www.comedy-festival.co.uk <http://www.comedy-festival.co.uk/> )
Please forward to other parties you feel may be interested.
