DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM STUDIES

SENIOR LECTURER IN INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS

REF:  R4038
The Department of Journalism Studies has 13 academic staff, 74 postgraduates and
210 undergraduates.  The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate
courses to students wishing to enter the journalism profession or political
communications and has a thriving doctoral programme.

The department has an active research programme covering a wide range of topics
within the fields of journalism, public and political communication, and new
communications technologies. The department's research strategy has a
multi-disciplinary orientation and includes the establishment of active
research links and collaborative research ventures with other departments
within the University of Sheffield as well as with researchers from other
institutions within the UK and abroad. The department secured an RAE ranking of
4 in 2001 and is renowned for its applied undergraduate and postgraduate taught
courses

The newly appointed senior lecturer will be expected to contribute to curriculum
development and to current undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

You will also be expected to undertake research from at least one of the areas
on List A and be able to demonstrate your research expertise in one or more of
the areas on List B:

List A
a) International communications and journalism studies
b) Recent developments in new media and new and emerging patterns of social
communication
c) Recent developments in public communication

List B
a) Developments in the EU communication sector
b) Research in aspects of international communications and journalism studies
Also, you will be expected pursue research funding, attract postgraduates to the
department, undertake international collaborative work and actively contribute
to the research culture of the department.

POST DETAILS

JOB TITLE:  Senior Lecturer: International Communications

BRIEF OUTLINE: You will carry out teaching, research and administration with a
high standard of creativity and innovation and show evidence of recognised
standing in the profession. You will also design, prepare, coordinate and
deliver teaching programmes, including preparing and supervising different
modes of assessment.  Applicants should have a PhD, or equivalent experience,
in a relevant subject area, with a proven ability in teaching and research. 
Significant research and development experience relating to this area is very
important.  Experience in journalism while not essential would be relevant.

REPORT TO:  Head of Department

MAIN ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
<sum> Design teaching programmes for courses.
<sum> Deliver teaching courses.
<sum> Coordinate team teaching.
<sum> Carry out assessment for courses.  
<sum> Supervise undergraduate and postgraduates
<sum> Carry out course evaluation.
<sum> Carry out pastoral role for students.
<sum> Conduct personal research of a substantial external reputation.
<sum> Supervise postgraduate research students and research staff.
<sum> Carry out a significant departmental administrative role to a high
standard.

PLANNING & ORGANISING:
<sum> Teaching-related and administrative work as allocated by the Head of
Department and various committees. 
<sum> Plan and prioritise own workload on a short, mid and long term basis.
<sum> Proactively manage responsibilities in relation to teaching, supervising
research staff and students and administrative tasks.
<sum> Effectively manage research assistants and research students to ensure
they perform to a consistently high standard.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
Finance:  Manage/co-manage external research funding over period of grants(s). 

Supervision:  Supervise or co-supervise undergraduate/postgraduate project
students and/or PhD students. Manage research assistants and/or research
associates as required.

Applicants should demonstrate evidence of the following:

Qualifications
<sum> Good first degree and a PhD in the relevant subject area (or the
equivalent in professional qualifications and experience) (E)

Management
<sum> Experience of academic supervision of students (E)

Personal effectiveness
<sum> Proven ability in teaching, with substantial work experience in a similar
role (E)
<sum> Significant research and development experience relating to the relevant
subject area, with an established record of quality research publications and
research grant capture (E)
<sum> Evidence of international scholarship and experience of research grant and
project management (E)
<sum> Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (E)

SALARY:  £41,544 - £46,758 per annum, with the potential to progress to £54,207
upon demonstration of sustained exceptional contribution.
