Hi David,
I agree with Matthew: Flickr's more interesting, as its inherently about
images. See http://www.flickr.com/groups/museumoflondon/ for some pages
by Museum of London, and a very informative article on Wessex Archeology
in the current MCG Newsletter, which outlines some of the benefits (see
also http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=wessex+archeology for user
generated content based on Wessex contnt ).
Sustainability of sites: actually my bet is that Flickr will be around
a long time (there's a lot of folk invested a lot of content in it!).
Anyone disagree?
As to sustaining input: not sure how critical that is in a world where
ephemeral is good. After all, until very recently we launched websites
which were 'publications' and haven't been touched since (some of which
have fared better than others!).

Kurt,
Thats extremely useful! It seems a shame that non-profit organisations
cannot setup accounts as it would be extremely beneficial to the
cultural
sector, but of huge interest to people already on sites such as Facebook
etc.
Do you think sites such as Facebook would be coming round to the idea of
letting non-profits use the sites? I think Flikr is one such example.
