Depends on what type of study of course, but for RCTs there is the
CONSORT statement (www.consort-statement.org), which summarises all the
evidence around how you should do trials.
It is really about how you should report the results of trials, but
provides a nice, practical way in to study design for those of us who
are more used to appraising research than doing it.
The site is about to be relaunched, so will be updated very soon.
