Mark,
This depends on exactly what technology you are thinking of. If you are
thinking of scanners that will read barcodes in a book and transfer them
to a file to be loaded into your LMS, they aren't that expensive (an
ordinary scanner can be attached to a laptop). One of our Federation
libraries used such a mechanism a couple of years ago with some success,
though I believe they actually wheeled a PC round the shelves; I could
ask them to share their experiences if you wish; our LMS is Aleph. This
sort of technology is quite well-established (I used such scanners on a
student summer job at York UL in 1980).
Are you thinking more of RFID scanners? Our only experience of these is
with scanners used to copy a barcode to an RFID tag; we know scanners
for stock-checking by RFID exist, but have no direct experience of them.
HTH
