Coaching - How can I get support?

Financial assistance should be available from Social Services to support
independent living in the community (Community Care Funding). A recent
government circular states that Learning Difficulties Teams should take this
responsibility.
However, it is often no that simple. Mental health services may be more
willing to support you, especially if you are already under their care.
Also, in many areas, Social Serves and Health Authorities run parallel
services for mental health and learning difficulties. Any of these
organisations may fund a service. All follow a similar procedure for
agreeing funding however.
Coaching - How to get support in outline:
 A reliable diagnosis: From a psychiatrist or psychologist who is
accepted as authoritative
 Referral to local social services: Families can refer themselves
 Allocation of a social worker: Social service managers decide who
is entitled: you can appeal against these decisions
 Community care assessment: You can ask for this procedure to be
carried out: if refused, you can appeal. You can contribute to the
assessment
 Statement of community care needs: The assessment should outline
what you need in order to successfully live in the community
 BBi proposal to Social Worker/Care Manager: If coaching from BBi is
seen to be a useful way of meeting you community care needs, we will be
asked for a proposal that describes what we will offer and how much it will
cost
 Funding agreed: Most authorities have a panel that decides all
decision on funding.
You can appeal if turned down.

In essence, go to the person you know best in the services. If you don't
know anyone, go to your GP or to the local social services team. Be blunt
about the worst scenario you can imagine for your family if you are not
given some help. Call us first.
Coaching - Government guidance
This piece of Government Guidance (taken from the Department of Health
Website) may offer a useful argument if people are unwilling to take
responsibility for offering a service
Department of Health: National Definition Set: 22 Specialised mental health
(adult). Published: 10/12/2002
'While there is no expectation that learning disability services should meet
the needs of people with Asperger's syndrome it is recognized that
considerable professional expertise in the diagnosis and management of
Asperger's syndrome currently resides within learning disability service
providers.
Adults with Asperger's syndrome, or higher functioning autism should not
therefore be precluded from using learning disability services, if this is
currently the best way of meeting their needs. It seems logical, however,
that the psychiatric needs of adults and children with Asperger's syndrome
should be met within mainstream mental health provision.'

AWESOME LANE HOTSPUR PROJECT
Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s team pride themselves on working with many
different groups from a range of backgrounds. This inclusive approach
extends to a number of projects working with people with learning
difficulties and/or disabilities.
One such example is a football coaching project for children with Asperger
syndrome and high functioning autism (AS). Asperger syndrome is a form of
autism and affects the way a person communicates and relates to others.
People with Asperger syndrome do not usually have the accompanying learning
disabilities associated with autism; in fact, people with Asperger syndrome
are often of average or above average intelligence, but individuals have
difficulty with communication and social relationships. The project is an
innovative collaboration between Haringey Autism - a branch of the National
Autistic Society - Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and the Haringey Mencap LTD
Active London Project, funded by Sport England.
