Hi Margo:
On a bit of a more serious note...I've always struggled with how much to tell people before they come to a focus group as I don't want them to have rehearsed answers. I remember doing assessments of cancer knowledge, attitudes and beliefs and all I told them was that the topic was "health."
Anthropologists are big on reciprocity. I also provide some refreshments, but mainly I emphasize that I give participants a good listener.
Best,
Bertie Mo, Ph.D., MPH

H'mm a free lunch, it sounds a bit like, the condemned man ate a herty
breakfast.
Now I am going to be doing PhD research myself without a grant I have got to
figure how I am going to manage to recruit volunteers without the incentive
of a free lunch. Maybe I shall have to drug and kidnap them :)
