There's a story about me / my situation in a residential home that has made
it to the front page of the BBC News website today. I'm slightly bemused
that I'm represented by a photo of the wheelchair user from Little Britain!!
but still, I think the guy has done a reasonable article about some of the
limitations of the institutionalised care system.
The article itself is at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6288812.stm
In separate news, the result of Leonard Cheshire's rebranding has finally
become evident. You may recall that last year they employed consultants at
vast cost who came up with such puke-making names as "equability" and
"ABL-UK". They managed to do this without consulting Leonard Cheshire's
family, you can imagine the resultant furore.
Well it turns out the £300,000+ they spent on rebranding has been extremely
well spent, I'm sure we will all agree - the organisation former known as
the Leonard Cheshire Foundation is now called Leonard Cheshire Disability,
and has a crap new logo.
http://www.leonard-cheshire.org/?lid=5339
"The new square logo puts an emphasis on the word ‘ability’ – to quickly and
powerfully get across our strongly held belief that society should recognise
and embrace disabled people’s abilities."
I feel so empowered, I could cry.
The entirety of the Leonard Cheshire Christmas card sales last year came to
approximately £50,000. I wonder what all the people who bought such cards,
assuming that their money would go to us poor powerless crips, would think
if they knew that they had effectively funded one sixth of the cost of
Leonard Cheshire adding one word to its name.
